Autumn Dreams
By David L. Gamble
The cool air feels so good and brisk, white puffy clouds in the sky,
Days grow shorter, and we sip hot chocolate and colorful leaves catch the eye.
This is winters faithful Harold, letting is know the Old Man is on the way,
Children going home from school chatter, run, laugh and play.
The fall weather always brings back such fond memories of childhood,
Adventures with my friends, playing in the park, life was simple and good.
Sleepy sun meanders surely toward his bed as night begins to fill the sky,
I feel a little sad, but I must make my way home, say to my friends, goodbye.
I walk into a house full of love and the smell of grandma’s sweet potato pie,
I know I can’t have it till after supper, I just walk to my room with a sigh.
Homework is done and I am so hungry, I wash my hands and dash to the table,
I love it when my grandparents visit. I’d keep them here forever if I were able.
“How long will you be here grandpa?” I ask. “Oh, I guess until after the first,”
Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s too. Oh boy I was ready to burst!
Now it is Saturday. No school today. Do your chores, run outside with friends,
When we get together, the excitement is high, full of energy the fun never ends.
Kickball, dodge ball and stick ball too, they’re all great fun, there’s never a frown,
Handsprings and somersaults, on a bead of bright colorful leafs we splash down.
When life gets rough, and people and day-to-day strife could elicit screams,
I make myself smile. I just remember my childhood and get lost in autumn dreams.
