I noticed something the other night.

I was sleeping alone, which isn't something I'm used to, in an empty house, mostly empty bed, in a dark room that somehow seemed to be getting darker.

It was bad quiet. The quiet that isn't complete, but littered with unidentifiable noises that your mind can transform into anything - a window being forced open, a prowler sneaking down your hall, or the sound an inter-dimensional portal makes as it opens to allow its hellspawn access to your closet.

You have to love fate (that's what I call it when God let's things happen to me that I don't like or understand).


I don't understand fate. When I was a kid I thought it was on my side. I thought I would always be one of the few lucky people that it smiled on. It starts with an "s" but I don't think that's a smile fate keeps dropping on me.

I can't complain. I'm lucky. I have to much, far too much to complain.

I haven't been a very good uncle for the last 12 or 13 years. Especially to my 13 year old niece. I was pretty good for a couple of weeks and then it just got away from me.

I remember I babysat her once when I was about 24 years old. Just me and this platinum haired 3 month old girl. It was a terrifying experience for both of us. I begged. She cried. I prayed. She cried. I cried. She cried louder. The entire day scared out of me, what I had to wipe out of her.
